Veteran’s Day, Wednesday, November 11th, is a day dedicated to honoring all American veterans and their service to our nation. If you are a veteran, everyone at GetFive sincerely thanks you for your service and wishes you all the success you deserve in the future!

Since our inception, we’ve helped members of the military find fulfilling jobs post-discharge. We understand the transition from active duty to civilian life can be difficult, and finding employment can be a major hurdle.

If you’re a veteran looking to find a job in the civilian world, consider these strategies to boost your success:

1. Translate your military skills
It’s important to be able to translate your military skills in a meaningful way that future employers can understand. Be prepared to speak about military experiences and demonstrate valuable skills like project management, leadership, multitasking, ability to work under stress, etc. Showcase these skills and strengths in your resume and cover letter by providing examples of military job duties. Military.com’s skills translator can be a big help as you’re getting started.

2. Network
It’s important to build a professional network of people both in and out of the military. If you don’t have a LinkedIn profile, start one today and use it to connect with other military members, as well as professionals in the industry you’d like to pursue. Be proactive and attend networking events, join an industry group and take advantage of military job-placement programs.

3. Use military job search sites
Websites and job search engines tailored for vets can streamline your job hunt to help you find fulfilling employment. Here are just a few quality options:
VA for VETS
Feds Hire Vets
My Next Move for Veterans
VetJobs

4. Plan ahead and use military-sponsored programs
If possible, plan for your transition to civilian life well before your discharge; a few weeks is not enough. If you’re able to form at least a basic plan while still in the military that puts you on a fast path for future success. Use military programs, such as the GI Bill, to complete your education and grow your skills. A college education may not guarantee you a job, but it can definitely help.

Good luck on the next chapter of your post-military life. So many companies actively hire veterans and with the right attitude and strategies, you’ll find a rewarding job you’ll feel proud to go to every day.
