Feeling Stressed? Practice Mindfulness

Whether you’re job searching or working hard at your current job, your career often brings high levels of stress. And between family, school, paying bills and chores, it seems like there’s never enough time. But living with constant stress is not only chaotic, it’s also exhausting. Too much stress leads to health problems down the road. If you’re feeling the pressure, it’s important to take control now, and GetFive can help.

What can you do?

Some people spend too much time dwelling on their past, thinking about the things they wish they had done differently. Is that you? If so, remember that ruminating on the past doesn’t get you anywhere. Then there are those who spend too much time thinking about the future, constantly wishing for something better. Medical studies show that one of the best ways to manage stress is to stay focused on the present moment. Being in the present allows us to see what is real and what is not. You can manage your stress by simply choosing what to think about.

Practicing mindfulness

While there’s no such thing as a blank mind, you can strengthen your focus and reduce stress by practicing mindfulness. There are a few ways to do this:

Body scan – Allow your attention to slowly and systematically move through your entire body. Start by bringing your attention to your toes. Simply observe them without judgement. Then slowly move up through your feet, ankles, calves, knees, thighs, belly, chest, back, shoulders and arms. Finish with your neck, face and head. Pause at each body part, noting any tension or feeling of energy.

Resting the mind – Assume a straight spine but relaxed body position and simply take notice of whatever is passing through your mind. Take three breaths, then count ten breaths. If you notice your mind is elsewhere or you stop counting, try again. Start doing this for five minutes every day, then work up to 10, 15 or even 20 minutes.

No matter what your stressors are, you can take control and work to reduce them by practicing mindfulness. Strengthen your mind and manage your stress so you can tackle all your career goals.
