Need a Job? Make Sure You’re Networking the Right Way

You’ve heard the theory: the more people you ask about job openings, the more likely it is that you’ll eventually stumble into an open position. So you reach out to everyone you know and get referred beyond this circle. But this kind of networking won’t get you much job search traction. Your outreach should be more carefully crafted and executed.

Whether you’re talking to friends, or friends of friends or people at a networking event, effective networking is based on the following seven tips:

  1. Know exactly what kind of job you want and be able to articulate it. Perfect your pitch so people will know how to help you.
  2. Remember your goal is to meet the right people in the right organization, so be specific. Tell people about the type of job and organization you’re targeting.
  3. When you meet with people, show them your list of targeted positions and organizations. They’ll take that kind of tangible focus and determination more seriously.
  4. Keep in mind that people are also looking for you to help them. Networking is just as much about giving as it is getting, so work on building some lifelong relationships.
  5. Stay in touch with the appropriate contacts that you make. Keep them updated on your job search.
  6. Find a balance between networking and direct contact. Even if you don’t have any links to the organization you’re targeting, there’s no need to wait. You can reach out directly.
  7. When you’re settled into your new job, don’t lose touch with all those people who helped you along the way. Stay engaged with your network and lend a hand when needed.

A big part of job searching is expanding your network, so make sure you’re doing it the right way. GetFive is your go-to source for networking tips, resume help, interview advice and more.
