Career in Transition? How Good Are Your Technology Skills?

The majority of baby boomers did not start their professional careers in the digital world. Times have changed, and now we are surrounded by social networks, smartphones and Google.

Individuals and companies that have not embraced technology will find it very difficult to compete in today’s global and wired world.

Those who are in between jobs or looking for new opportunities often worry that they lack the needed tech skills to be competitive.

Fortunately, if you’re not sure how you stack up in this brave new digital world, you can still catch up. Here are eight tips on how to get started.

  1. Take an inventory of your existing equipment at home and determine what is usable and what needs to be replaced.
  2. If you currently share a computer with other members of your household, consider buying one for yourself.
  3. Find a place in your home to work without background noise and traffic.
  4. If you don’t have wireless internet access at home, get it! Make sure your wireless network is strong in your work area and secured with a password.
  5. Set up an email address to be used exclusively for business purposes.
  6. Consider purchasing an all-in-one printer, scanner, copier and fax machine if you don’t already have one.
  7. Find a reliable tech support person and set up a maintenance program for your equipment.
  8. Upgrade to a smartphone (BlackBerry, iPhone, or Android), which will give you access to your email and the internet while you’re out.
